UPSETS PULLED AT REGIONAL MATCHUPSUC Davis' 4-year reign as the Men’s Western Region Champions ended yesterday at Woodward Park as the young Wildcats of Chico State stole the show. About 3 hours North of Fresno was another battle - The JC NorCal Championships. Yet another male show-down took place as the 3-time defending NorCal Champs, College of the Sequoias, narrowly lost the battle against West Valley College.

CONFERENCE MEETS ALL AROUNDThe Conference meets have come and gone, with most of them being held this last weekend. For a list of conference results go to Race Results. The links below are some of the recaps found on different sites. A Run Much correspondent traveled to Salinas, CA. for the Junior College Coast Conference Championships and came back with a report.
WAC: SJSU on WAC
CCAA: Chico State on CCAA | UC Davis on CCAA
Pac-10: Stanford on Pac-10’s | Pac-10.org on Pac-10’s
WCC: SFU on WCC | SCU on WCC | WCCsports.com on WCC
**The Junior College action heated up as the Coast Conference Championships were held in Salinas at Toro Regional Park. For the ladies, the race didn't appear to be much of a conference at all. A "dual" meet started at the gun between the West Valley Vikings (aka Wolfpack) and the Hartnell Cougars. Megan Sainsbury of WVC took the race out fast along with Hartnell’s Carmen Buenrostro and Candace Vielbaum. They were followed by a pack of 6 Hartnell ladies with WVC’s 2-5 runners close at their heels. It appeared as though Hartnell secured their win by mile 2. The Lady Vikings, however, kept working after the hills knowing that “every runner counts” as they chased the packs of white Cougar jerseys. Buenrostro’s commanding lead helped secure her win as she stopped the clock in 19:37 on the 3-mile course. Vielbaum (2nd – 19:57) soon followed, as did Sainsbury (3rd – 20:19). It seemed as though the real race was in the 4-10 spots. As the runners came around the final turn, coaches and spectators knew it was going to be close. In the end, Hartnell edged out WVC in team scoring by a narrow 7 points (24-31). Both teams managed to put their top 5’s in the top 10. The Men's race was not as exciting in team competition as West Valley's men dominated the field winning with 28 points over CCSF’s 61. The individual race was much more interesting. Rigo Ramirez (SJCC) and Will Kraemer (WV) opened the race at 5:15 with many runners close in tow. At the 1.5-mile mark, Patrick Hernandez, of Hartnell, used his home course advantage and took his turn at leading. Hoping to use the hills to break the close pack, Hernandez pushed the pace. Kraemer and Ramirez caught up with Hernandez and it became a 3-man race with just over a mile to go. Kraemer eventually pulled ahead and got the win over Ramirez as he crossed the line in Pre-like fashion with a time of 20:51 for 4-miles. Ramirez finished a close second at 20:58, with Hernandez coming in at 21:08. West Valley took 4 of the top 10 places to help capture their 5th consecutive Coast Conference Title.
**This weekend’s JC action heads to Sierra College for the NorCal Championships. The hunt for the team title on the Men’s side should be exciting. College of the Sequoias (COS) has won the last 3 years and are shooting to defend their title, but watch for WVC as they hope to dethrone the Giants.

CHICO STATE BRINGS HOME TITLESThe tables seem to have turned this year. The Chico State Wildcats drove home happy yesterday as they defeated both UC Davis teams (Davis was 4-time defending CCAA champs). UC Davis captured 2nd place in both races. The 'Cats not only brought home 2 team titles, but 12 individual All-CCAA honors as well.
*JC Transfer from Saddleback College, Margaret Pridgen, led the Lady 'Cats with her 3rd place finish in 21:44. She was followed closely by the rest of her teammates as their 1-7 gap was a mere 28 seconds. Annmarie Housen of Cal State LA easily won the ladies 6k race with her time of 20:52. Housen was also named CCAA Runner and Freshman of the Year. Also in the top 5 was Audrey Sung of UCSD (2nd - 21:21), and Davis runners Laura Cherdack (4th - 21:47) and Sopagna Eap (5th - 21:48).
*On the Men's side, Chris Eggers, once again led his fellow Wildcats with his 2nd place effort. Eggers' time of 24:56 was only 4 seconds behind Cal Poly Pomona Freshman, Mark Batres. Batres won the 8k race with a course record time of 24:52 and earned CCAA Runner and Freshman of the Year honors in the process. UC Davis' Steven Laurie (4th - 25:02) snuck in between Chico's Matt Faulkner (3rd - 24:58) and Juan Sanchez (5th - 25:06).
*Coach Gary Towne was named CCAA Coach of the Year.CCAA Championships Complete Results

SAN FRANCISCO TREATSSan Francisco was the site of 3 races this week.
**The JC's raced at the beautiful Golden Gate Park on Thursday for the annual Lou Vasquez Invite. Trina Cox of Santa Rosa cruised to another win for herself, covering the 3 mile course in 18:42. DVC was the winning ladies team led by Cassandra Goodson and Jenna George (2nd & 4th, respectively). On the Men's side, Will Kraemer was the top NorCal runner this week with his 2nd place showing. Kraemer's time of 20:46 on the 4 mile course was only 28 seconds behind the winner, Humberto Vargas of East LA. In team competition, East LA won, but COS and WVC were close in tow getting 2nd & 3rd, respectively.
**In Open competition, the 6th race of the PA XC circuit was held at the hilly Presidio National Park in SF. The course is filled with ups & downs, but to most it seems like there are more up's than not. The day's races started of with the Men at 8:30am. Konrad Knutsen (U of O alum), of Adidas Transports led from start to finish. His 18:57 clocking on the challenging 3.55 mile course was more than 15 seconds faster than last years winning time. Teammate Corey Creasey got 2nd and Reebok Aggie (former UC Davis Aggie), Ryan Miller got 3rd (19:02 & 19:05, respectively). The Women's race started at 10:00. Sarah Davey of the Humboldt Track Club won with her time of 21:53, which was more than 30 seconds faster than last years winning time run by Rosemarie Lagunas. Lagunas made her debut this year at this course, once again. Although she is still trying to come back from a severe case of Plantar Fasciitis, she still managed to get 3rd place (22:56). Reebok Aggie, Rachel Cook of Santa Cruz got 2nd place (22:05). Fellow Reebok Aggie and former All-American from UC Davis, Yvonne Liebig wasn't too far behind with her 4th place finish in 23:10. Look for Liebig to keep challenging those front runners by the end of the season.
**On Sunday we headed back to GG Park where San Francisco State hosted annual XC invite. Fresno State, San Jose State, CAL Berkeley, and SFU were just some of the schools in attendance. Kara June of Fresno State helped her ladies team capture the win with her 1st place finish. June covered the 6k course in 21:46. Berkeley red-shirt, Girmay Guangul, won the Men's 8k race with his time of 25:27. Fresno State, led by Fernando Cabada (2nd - 25:36), won the team competition.

STANFORD RESULTSThe weather was on our side this year out at the Stanford Golf Course. With great conditions came some fast races.
The top high school times of the day were certainly quite impressive. Lauren Jesperson of Klamath Union edged out Tim Nelson of Liberty Christian to get the win. Both boys were clocked at 14:54 over the 5k course. In the girls races, Caitlin Chock of Granite Bay ran the fastest time of the day with her 17:25 effort.
The college races soon followed and Stanford definitely proved that they had the home course advantage out there. The Stanford runners captured 3 individual victories. Ryan Hall won the Men's 4k race with a time of 11:49. Sara Bei took the Women's title in the 6k race and just missed going under 20 minutes with her time of 20:02. Finally, while red-shirting this year as a junior, Ian Dobson was the final Stanford runner to get a win with his victory in the Men's 8k. Dobson's time was 23:27. In the Women's 4k, Emilie Mondor of Simon Fraser beat 3-time NCAA Champion Lauren Fleshman with her time of 13:32. Fleshman took second with a 13:48. The non-scored Men's 8k was won by Chico State red-shirt Tyler Graff. Graff's time was 24:36.

STANFORD XC INVITESaturday is definitely not the day to be golfing in Palo Alto. Stanford University will once again be hosting their annual Cross Country Invitational along the beautiful fairways of the Stanford Golf Course. This full day event begins with the High School competition at 9:45am. The high school races are broken up into their respective divisions, with the last race being the Div. 1 Varsity Boys. The Collegiate and Open races begin at 3:45 with the Women’s 5k. The schedule will be like it was last year with different distances run for both the men and women. The women have the choice between the 4k, 5k (non-scored), and the 6k. The men have either a 4k or an 8k. The last race of the day starts at 5:50. Saturday is sure to full of great competition. Some schools are flying in to the Bay Area to go head to head with some of the best – some of which include: Purdue, Portland State, Duke, and Wisconsin. The Stanford Golf Course will also be the host of this year’s Div. 1 Western Regional Championships in November. Come out and show your support on Saturday for all the competitors.

GREAT RESULTS FROM AROUND THE BAYThe all-too-familiar Woodward Park took its toll this weekend - yet again. After finally recovering from last years "Mud-fest" of a High School State Meet, I bet the park wishes it wasn't such an ideal setting for all the stampedes of runners. Both Fresno City College and Fresno State hosted their invites at Woodward Saturday morning. By days end, over 600 participants had raced on the course and left their mark. This being just the beginning of the torment that Woodward Park has to go through, as it plays host to numerous high school and junior college races throughout the season. We can't forget to mention that both the Division 2 Western Regional Championships and the CA JC State Meet will be held in Fresno in November. I'm sure, by now, that this course that we "love-to-hate" is used to the beating it takes year in and year out. And to stay true to tradition, this year is no different.
**The Junior College runners began at 8:30am with a record number of 30 schools participating. The ladies raced first before the Fresno heat really began to take its toll. Michelle Icban led her team (Orange Coast College) to victory by taking the individual title with an impressive early season time of 18:47. The first NorCal lady was Michelle Garcia of College of the Sequoias who took 4th place with a time of 19:23. Garcia was followed closely by Cassandra Goodson of Diablo Valley College (5th – 19:25). In team competition, Hartnell College took 5th overall and was first for northern California.
The Men’s race started at 9:15 as a little over 200 runners toed the line. With such a large field there was no doubt that there was going to be some jostling going on. If these guys wanted to get any kind of position early on, they needed to get out quick and avoid getting lost in the swarm of runners. Mt. Sac won the team title and also had the overall individual winner, Ozzie Pina. Pina covered the 4 mile course with a time of 20:37. In the north, Hector Figueroa (17th - 21:48) led COS to a 4th place team finish. Will Kraemer of West Valley College led the charge for the Vikings with his 22:09, placing 26th overall. West Valley was 5th in team scoring.**Most Division 2 schools kicked off their seasons at the Fresno State Invite. As stated above, CSU Stanislaus is hosting the Western Regional Championships at Woodward Park later this season. Some schools flew in from Alaska and Washington in order to preview the course before November. Along with the D2 schools were some Div. 1 and Open runners. Once again, the ladies started things off. UCSD star Audrey Sung led for much of the race, but in the last mile Emma Garrard of University of Nevada-Reno took over and grabbed the win on the 5k course. Garrard managed to just dip under the 18 minute mark with her time of 17:59. Sung ended up 2nd only 10 seconds back. Other top finishers included Kara June of Fresno State (3rd – 18:19), Katie Gossnell of Humboldt State (5th – 18:34), Kim Bates of Santa Clara University (7th – 18:47), and Katie Lee of Chico State (10th – 19:00). In the ladies team competition, Nevada-Reno took the title with 46 points to runner-up Chico State’s 93 points. They were followed by UCSD, UC Davis, then Santa Clara.
The final race of the day was the Men’s 8k. As the race got underway, Humboldt State frontman Pete Cluesner took the early lead, followed closely by a herd mostly made up of Chico State and UC Davis runners. Also in the chase was former JC stud, Mario Macias of COS, running for High Sierra Track Club. As the race went on, some of the early leaders began to fade and Chris Eggers of Chico moved to the front. Eggers went on for the win crossing the line with a time of 25:44. Fellow Wildcat, Matt Faulkner also dipped under 26 minutes (25:59) to capture 2nd and edging out Macias (26:00). The team battle between Chico and Davis ended with the Wildcats getting a narrow victory over the Aggies (43 – 52). Other names worth noting include: Matt Laye of UC Davis (4th – 26:03), Cluesner (6th – 26:09), Fernando Cabada of Fresno State (7th – 26:13), and Jak Kuehn of UC Davis (8th – 26:18).***A few other races took place this weekend including the Champions Invitational Mile in San Francisco. The Mile had participants from all over coming out for their shot at up to $6,000. Kevin Sullivan of Canada got the win with a time of 3:56-low. Sullivan was followed by 6 other men under 3:58.3.

RUNNERS, TAKE YOUR MARKSWell, its that time of year again folks. Summer vacation is coming to an end, school is just around the corner, and cross country season awaits us. This is the year for excitement if you live near the bay area. Major championship races are coming to us. For the universities, the Regional Championships for Division 1 are right here in our backyard at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto. Division 2 Regional action is in Fresno at the infamous Woodward Park. For those post-collegiate harriers still around, the National Championships have come to us and will be in Rocklin on the Sierra College course in Decemeber.
*Speaking of those wonderful open runners, this year's XC season started off in Santa Cruz last Saturday as the opening meet for the PA XC circuit. The weather conditions in Santa Cruz County stood true to form as it was a perfectly cool morning - what more could a runner ask for. The first race was a success. A good showing of some of those who did their 'homework' over the summer. But we all know not to get ahead of ourselves. It's a long season and we have yet to see some of the other faces out there, ie. Farm Team, Aggies, etc. A majority of the PA racers will open up their season at the Golden Gate race in San Francisco on Sept. 7th. This weekend is the Empire Open in Santa Rosa and it is sure to be another good showing of what is to come.
**Be sure to mark your calendars for the following important race dates:
November 9th -- Division 2 Regional Championships (Fresno)
November 16th -- Division 1 Regional Championships (Palo Alto)
November 23rd -- JC State Meet (Fresno)
November 24th -- PA Championships (SF)
December 14th -- National XC Championships (Rocklin)To see a complete list of races go to Race Results.
