TETER CLOSES IN ON RECORD!

The American Indoor Record in the 800 meters obviously isn't enough for a certain Farm Team runner. To go along with her recent Indoor 800m title, Nicole Teter took the US Outdoor Nationals 800m title 2 weeks ago in Palo Alto with a personal best time of 1:58.83. The very next day she boarded a plane and headed over to Europe with the hopes of bettering her time enough to get herself another American Record. Right now the outdoor record of 1:56.40 is held by Jearl Miles-Clark from back in 1999. Miles-Clark was 33 years old at the time. Teter, just 28, is chasing that mark and seems to be getting closer and closer every week. This past Tuesday in Lausanne, she improved her time once again by running 1:57.97. Although she would say that the 800 is her event, she is also on the rise in the 1500m. She recently ran a 4:04.89 to better her previous PR by about 5 seconds. At this rate of improvement, Teter may just come home with another American Record. Keep up on Teter's chase for the record in Europe in the 2002 Grand Prix.

US NATIONALS!!!

What a weekend! As you know, it was Championship time again. This time the meet was brought to us right here in the Bay Area. Filled with many surprises as well as the expected great performances. For those that missed it, I'll try and fill you in on a "brief" run-down of the meet.

** After the sun went down Friday night, the lady 10k runners toed the line. Eventhough the field did not include the 10k American Record holder, Deena Drossin, it did have Jen Rhines, Kim Fitchen, Milena Glusac, and many other hopefuls looking for a National title. Rhines took it out from the beginning and led the entire race. Her time of 31:57 was just off her 31:41 back in early May.
** Next up was the Men's 10k. Many of the same faces from last years US Championships in Oregon were in this race yet again. Last year, Abdi Abdirahman beat out Meb Keflezighi and Alan Culpepper, but Meb would have his revenge. All 3 of these men battled it out and switched leads for about 9k, with Brad Hauser falling off just after 5k. Culpepper slowly began to fade back in the final laps. Then it was, literally, a back and forth battle for the last 2.5 laps until Meb threw in one final surge with 400 to go. Although, Abdi did close well and got within a second of Meb, it just wasn't enough. Meb finished with a time of 27:41, which is about 30 seconds slower than his American Record of 27:13.98. Great race to watch.

** Moving on... the 5k's were Saturday night. Once again the ladies were up first. But this was definitely one of the races I was waiting for. It seemed to be a Drossin/Runyan/Jacobs matchup according to the heat sheets, but Regina decided to stick to just the 1500 this year. Drossin started off with a commanding lead and dropped everyone except Runyan who worked her way up from about 15-20m back. Runyan (last year's 5k champion) then stayed on the shoulder of Drossin until about a lap to go. But you could tell during the last mile that Runyan looked smooth and had a lot left in her, while Drossin may have been feeling a bit of her early surge as the race progressed. Runyan closed her last 400 in about 65 seconds and captured her 2nd National title in this event.
Meb and Culpepper came back and ran the 5k after their 10k performances the night before. The field was stacked and it was anyone's race. The slow early pace meant a very tight pack of eager racers. Bolota Asmeron (CAL alum) took the lead and was closely followed by a slew of runners, including Meb, Culpepper, Todd Williams, Matt Lane, and to much surprise, the young Junior at Stanford, Louis Luchini. With all the changing of positions throughout the race, I don't really remember how it all broke up. I do know that Culpepper took the lead towards the end and broke Meb, Lane and Asmeron. Culpepper had a huge finish and ran 13:27 - an amazing double. Meb, not too far back, barely held off a late charging Matt Lane, as they took 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

** The remainder of the finals were on Sunday. In the women's 800m it was, once again, the Nicole Teter Show! Teter took the pace out quick (57-58) and held strong in the third 200 with a few girls breathing down her neck. But Teter threw down the hammer and began her monsterous kick at 600. She finished more than 3 seconds ahead of second place, with a new outdoor PR of 1:58.83. She is this year's Indoor and Outdoor National Champion at 800m. She leaves today for her European tour. "I am comfortable running in the USA. It will be more competitive in Europe. I am looking forward to the competition." [quote taken from USATF website]

** In the ladies 1500, everyone knew it was going to be a battle between Regina Jacobs and Suzy Favor Hamilton, but Sarah Schwald, Miesha Marzell and Mari Chandler were also shooting for that top spot. Schwald apparently wanted an honest race as she took it out in about 64 seconds. Hamilton and Jacobs soon took over, but Schwald held on. Jacobs used Hamilton and just sat on her shoulder not wanting to do any more work than she had to. With a lap to go, Jacobs moved into the lead and held it through the finish. A tiring Hamilton was almost caught in a final staightaway battle with Schwald, but was able to get the lean at the tape to capture 2nd. Jacobs time was 4:09.57, which is the fastest in the US this year.
** The men's 1500 was up for grabs. It seriously was anybody's race. The first 3 laps, it seemed that nobody really wanted to make any big moves. The race came down to whoever was going to have the most at the end and who was going to make the first move. Seneca Lassiter and Bryan Berryhill battled down the home stretch with Lassiter getting the edge. The top 7 were within 2 seconds of eachother. Very close finishes. Lassiter's time was 3:40.90.

[note: Some of the details about the races mentioned above may be off a bit. But you get the idea!]
