BLAZING IN TEXASAngelo State University hosted the NCAA Division 2 Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend. Many of our "local" harriers came home as All-Americans by finishing in the top 8 in the nation. Also the prestigous Prefontaine Classic took place on Sunday in Oregon. High-caliber athletes of all areas headed to Eugene to compete against some of the best.
**After a long season of logging in the miles and putting in the workouts and stepping up when it was time to perform... the hard work has paid off. The top Division 2 athletes in the nation met in San Angelo, Texas to determine who was going to be the NCAA Champion. Races began on Thursday with trials in most events, as well as the Finals for the 10K races. The meet continued through Saturday with many exciting finals along the way. Our local All-Americans include:
UC Davis: Anne Glenn placed 7th in the Women's 10K (37:39.87) -- Heather Gibson got 2nd place in the Women's 3k Steeplechase (10:51.78)
Chico State: Freshman, Katie Lee took 6th in the Women's 3000m (10:11.08) -- Ryan Locklin got 5th in the Men's 800m (1:50.93)
CSU Stanislaus: Diljeet Mendoza 7th in Women's 800m (2:14.60) & 7th in the Women's 1500m (4:36.34)
Humboldt State: Jason Walker took 6th in the Men's 3k Steeplechase (9:33.78)
UC San Diego: Audrey Sung got 5th in the Women's 3000m (10:10.68)
**The Prefontaine Classic is one of the premiere track & field meets in the United States. This year's results showed no less. Many outstanding performances took place on the legendary Hayward Field. Some of which include Hicham El Guerrouj's win in the mile (3:50.89). The Women's 1500m was an unforgettable matchup of what is to come down the road. American 800m star Nicole Teter took the win over Regina Jacobs and many others in the "kicker's race." The slow early pace played perfect for Teter as she took off in the last quarter to cross the line first with a time of 4:12.93 over Jacobs' 2nd place time of 4:14.95. Marla Runyan nipped Sonia O'Sullivan at the line in the Women's 3000m (8:39.36 to 8:39.88, respectively). Runyan's time was 0.03 seconds off the meet and stadium record. American's Meb Keflezighi (13:31.37) and Tim Broe (13:31.61) took 6th and 7th in the Men's 5K. Pre Classic Results

RAINY DAYSThe rain was coming down, the thunder was rumbling, the lightning was crashing....and us runners were still running. During the scarce patches of sun on Saturday there were, in fact, some quality races run.
**In Sacramento, the 10th annual Panther/Stan Wright Invite took place between the cloud bursts. The meet featured athletes from the community college, four-year college, open and masters divisions. Some highlights included Santa Rosa JC star Trina Cox and her impressive double. Cox won the 1500m over Stanislaus' Wendy Fortino with a time of 4:44.18, then Cox came back in the 800 (after a 10 minute rain delay just before) and placed 5th with a time of 2:17.03. Both times rank her 2nd on the State JC list. In the Men's 5k, UC Davis redshirt, Jak Kuehn (racing for his team HORSECOW) took the demanding lead from the gun and never looked back on his way to a solo 14:54.95 win. [Kuehn recently placed 6th at the Div 2 Indoor Nationals in the mile with a time of 4:07.65.] Patiently working his way up through the pack was West Valley JC Freshman Matt Heard. Consistently clipping off 74-76sec splits, Heard finished with a PR of 15:36.55 earning him 2nd place in the loaded race.
**Action in Berkeley heated up on the track as the results will show. Schools joining the Bears at the Cal Invite were Stanford, Washington, Tennessee, UC Davis, and Kent St. Some noteworthy performances were from Stanford's Mark Hassell in his 800m win (1:51.46), Cal's Corey Creasey narrow win in the Men's 5K (14:40.24) with Davis' Steve Laurie and Ryan Miller close behind (14:42.52 and 14:44.63, respectively) in 3rd & 4th. On the ladies side, Erin Belger of Cal got 2nd in the 800m with a time of 2:12.11, Laura Turner of Stanford won the 1500m clocking 4:31.17, Davis' Sopagna Eap and Anne Glenn earned NCAA provisional marks in the 3k with times of 10:07.91 and 10:11.15, respectively, and Cal's Marielle Schlueter won the ladies 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:45.40.
**The forces of nature caught up with yet another track meet, this one in San Diego at the Olympic Training Center. The Elite American Community College Invitational invites the top 3 athletes from each region to compete for All-American honors. Regions include Northern California, Southern California, Oregon, Washington, the Mid-West, and the Eastern States. With the winds coming in at ridiculous speeds, many of the distance races were affected. Apparently the wind wasn't slowing down Eddie Alaniz of San Jose City College during his 2nd place showing in the 1500m. Alaniz (who will attend Cal Poly SLO next year) battled to the tape with Mt Sac's Ozzie Pina and just missed the victory with a time of 3:57.74 to Pina's 3:56.54. The Women's Steeple was also contested and Becka Zamolo from Diablo Valley took 3rd with her time of 11:53.46. Also representing the NorCal was Celeste Dunlap of West Valley in her 4th place performance in the 1500m (5:01.84). West Valley also proved to be strong in both Men's hurdle races. Nate Boudreaux and Jeremy Johnson went 1-2 in the 110HH (14.75 & 14.93) and then came back and took 1st and 3rd in the 400IH (Boudreaux 53.74 & Johnson 55.13).

WHAT A WEEK!This week proved to be yet another great showing for what is soon to come down the road. Indoors and Outdoors, there were many great performances to be noted from this weekend.
**Over in New York, the American Indoor 800m Record was broken by Nike Farm Team's Nicole Teter. Teter broke Mary Slaney's 22-year-old record of 1:58.9h and Suzy Hamilton's 1:58.92, from 1999, with her blazing (practically solo) effort time of 1:58.71. Check out the USATF article on Nicole Teter and others from that US Indoor Championships meet. US Indoors
**Many Collegiate schools kicked off their Outdoor season this weekend with a number of NCAA qualifying marks. Stanford hosted a 3-Way Spring Opener with Cal Poly SLO and many Farm Team members joining in this non-scoring meet. Jonathon Riley picked up where he left off last year. His NCAA qualifying time of 13:40.59 in the 5k today was only 4 seconds off of his lifetime best. Moving inland to Stanislaus State was the CCAA North Opener. Chico State, UC Davis, SFSU, and Sonoma State made the trek into Turlock for this 5-Way meet. Ryan Locklin of Chico State (formerly CCSF/UCSB) won the Men's 800m with an NCAA qualifying time of 1:51.26. Another Chico runner to hit an NCAA Provisional mark was freshman Katie Lee with her time of 10:15.17 to win the Women's 3K. UC Davis runner Justin Rau narrowly won the Men's 3K with a time of 8:26.68. In the Women's 1500m Diljeet Mendoza (Stanislaus) and Sopagna Eap (UCD) both hit Provisional marks with times of 4:36.16 and 4:39.08, respectively.
**In the Junior College scene we were all over the place. West Valley hosted a 5-Way meet (MPC, DVC, CSM, De Anza), American River held a 7-Way (Fresno, Butte, Sac City, Yuba, Merced, Lassen), Modesto had a 4-Way (Hartnell, COS, Chabot), and Delta College had a 5-Way (SJCC, Sierra, CCSF, Reedley). A couple of marks to note: Mario Marcias of COS bettered his 5k time to 14:46 (ranked #1 in State), Celeste Dunlap of WVC moves to 4th in the State with her 18:59 in the Women's 5k, and a few ladies tested out the newly added Steeplechase event this weekend. Cristy Beatty of ARC posted the fastest time with a 12:12 putting her 2nd on the State list. Becka Zamolo (DVC - 12:19) and Erin Quick (WVC - 12:43) also broke the 13-minute barrier in their debut showing.

THE BATTLE OF THE CONFERENCES!!It looks like we can technically say outdoor season has begun. Many of the JC's had their Conference Preview/Relays meets this past weekend. Some great early season marks have already been posted. Can't wait to see what will be produced throughout the season and in the end at Santa Barbara CC. Some quick highlights that I saw (or heard about)....
**In the Central Valley Conference, the College of the Sequoias (COS) Men proved that they have some leg speed too. Freshman Mario Macias had a nice 15/8 double, winning both events with times of 4:01.48 and 1:58.17.
**At the Bay Valley Conference Relays in Mendocino it looks like the ARC and DVC distance squads have been putting in the work over the break. Somewhat still a "newbie" to the sport of running, Becka Zamolo(DVC) won the Women's 5k with an excellent early season time of 19:18.7, and what could possibly be her first one on the track. ARC's Cristy Beatty was close behind with a 19:32.4.
**Moving over to the Coast Conference Preview meet at De Anza we found a friendly rivalry taken to the track. All the hype the previous week was on the Men's Distance Medley...a face off between San Jose City College (led by Eddie Alaniz) and West Valley College (led by Matt Heard a SJSU student/athlete at WVC because SJSU doesn't have track). Apparently SJCC had been bragging about their Men's team and how they would beat WVC because "Eddie is in such great shape". As the race began, Alaniz gave SJCC about a 75 meter lead in the 1200 leg. But the other members of the WVC team didn't give up and kept working. They were able to close the gap to about a 20-30 meter difference by the time Heard got the baton for the mile leg. By running a PR of 4:28 he was able to pull into the lead with 500m to go and then opened up a gap of his own. (*I'm going to try and download the video footage of the race this week. Hopefully I'll have it so you can see this exciting race unfold.*) The meet didn't end there. Alaniz came back in the open 800m and won with time of 2:00.51. In the Men's 5k, City College of San Francisco (CCSF) Sophomore Robert Eap practically ran a solo effort of 15:37 (His closest competitor was almost a minute behind him).

WHO'S READY TO GO??It is officially February and in case you didn't get the memo....Track is really here now! I sure hope we've all been doing our work. Indoors are almost done, and for some, the outdoor season starts next week. If you're like me, it seems like it was just yesterday that it we brought in the New Year. Time flies when you're having fun! So let's check out what this past week has brought us racing-wise.
**Again at Los Gatos it looked to be a pretty decent showing of talent. In the Men's Open Division it looks as if the 2-mile was quick. The results say "Springhorn" took the win and crossed the line in 9:12.12 ....could that possibly be Steven Springhorn from Chico State?? Inquiring minds want to know. (FYI - Steven is from Redding, Ca. and is now a Sophomore at Chico. My records show him having a (previous?) PR of 9:21.) In the Boys HS Division, it seems Jeremy Minau, a Sophomore at Menlo Atherton, bettered his Mile time of a few weeks ago from 4:41 to 4:39 this week.
**University of Nevada-Reno hosted the first of three Indoor meets on Saturday with the Wolf Pack Invite. The 200-meter wood-planked track bode well for some, but many seemed to suffer from either the altitude(5100'), dry air, or simply lack of conditioning in the off-season. Some of the highlights from the meet were in the Men's 800. The UC Davis men went 1-2-3 and all crossed the line in 1:57 with Temo Trujillo getting the win. On the Women's side, 2 high schoolers ran unattached and both got high 2:15's (Alexis Bartschi & Ashley Freeman).
**I have also failed to note about our recent accomplishments of Bay Area native, Regina Jacobs. Jacobs broke Lynn Jenning’s 16-year old World Best by almost 5 seconds with her 9:23.38 for 2-miles at the Boston Indoor Games (1/27). This last weekend she captured the win in the Mile at the Verizon Millrose Games. For someone who's 38 years old, she sure doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. While on the subject of Indoor races back East, let's not forget about Nicole Teter. Teter has found a new home here in the Bay Area and is a part of the very talented group of Post-Collegiates, the Nike Farm Team. She raced in Boston and New York and placed 2nd at both (2:01.54 & 2:04.37).

RAIN DOESN'T STOP US!Although there was a little rain on Saturday, that sure didn't stop those dedicated runners from gearing up and heading to the track.
**At Los Gatos it looks like Scott Slover (Leland HS/UCLA Grad) tested his sprinting skills in the 100m & 200m (11.3 & 23.1) and came out on top. Slover is best known for his soaring skills in the Pole Vault, but is usually found on the track in the off season.
**Moving on over to Concord, the DVC all comer meet offered some kids with a good workout. The day started off with the Women's 2000m Steeplechase. Maria Carrillo Senior Jenny Aldridge (*note: CA HS State Mile Champ in 2000 - 4:49.63*) ran her first ever steeple race in a very impressive 7:19. She followed her steeple victory with one heck of a workout. Aldridge competed in the 1500, 55m Dash, 100m, 400m, and the 800m. She is definitely a well-rounded athlete and will soon take her talents down to Arizona State next year. Also making a regular appearance were the Allen sisters, who also took part in many events that day. Be sure to check out all the results from the meet.

ALL-COMERS ARE HEATING UP!!**The season of outdoor Track starts off with some low key (in most cases) all-comer meets in the Bay Area. So far there have been some high caliber athletes showing up and strutting their stuff by posting some great marks.
*Los Gatos has had 3 Winter meets so far. Some of the high school names in attendance include Seniors Will Kraemer of Saratoga High and Christy Borak of Menlo-Atherton running their miles in 4:40 and 5:19, respectively. Another name to note is Chico State Freshman Tony Martinelli (Serra High Grad) who has posted two Sub-2 minute performances in the 800m so far. Martinelli was part of the Reebok Jr. Aggies this Summer at the Junior Olympics. As part of a 4x800 team he ran a very impressive 1:51 split. Keep an eye on this Wildcat on the Track this Spring.
*Diablo Valley College is now holding their own all-comer meets over the winter. With the new edition of Dan Cruz (has coached at WVC, Del Mar HS, and James Logan HS) as the Head Distance Coach, DVC is really getting its name on the map this year. There have been two meets so far and there are 3 more to go. DVC is the only venue contesting the steeplechase for both men & women (3k & 2k). So far there have been quite a number of great performances run there. High School senior Clara Horowitz (heading to Duke next year) ran 2:19 and 4:36 (1500m) at the first meet on Jan. 12th. Sisters Lindsey & Ashley Allen (College Park HS) ran the 2000m Steeplechase on Saturday in 7:50 and 7:58, respectively. Lindsey also ran a 7:45 last week in a solo effort for her first steeple race ever. Watch for her to be a threat in the future of the steeplechase. Also in attendence at the first meet was distance phenom Regina Jacobs. Jacobs ran the Open 400m in 58.1 (hand-timed).
*UC Berkeley started with their Winter meets this weekend and there were some quick times run. Check out the results to see who showed up.
**Last weekend was the Cal 10-Mile race in Stockton. Many Bay Area standouts were in attendence. Magdalena Lewy of the Nike Farm Team covered the 10 mile road race in 56:22 taking home the win in the Women's division. Farm Team (& former CAL) teammate Peter Gilmore won the "stacked" Men's race with a time of 48:58. I say stacked because there were so many familiar names throughout the list. Jimmerson, McManus, Bowen, Moreno, McMorran, Knutsen, Alaniz, Boulet, etc. That's a great field all in the top 20 within a 4 minute gap.

BACK ON TRACK!**Happy New Year my fellow running enthusiasts. It's 2002 and we are running on full steam again (no pun intended). The holiday spirit and breaks from school have (I'm sure) done us all some good. Now it is time to get things going again. As I would hope you know, Track is here. The Indoor season is upon us and the Outdoor races are coming up quick. Hopefully we didn't relax too much this winter, but rather were able to find time to get some great base training in.
**Did anybody get some NEW Spikes for Xmas? If not, you should get an early jump check out the latest styles out today. You can order yourself some of the new Kennedy's, Zoom W's (aka "Spoons"), or even the new zesty looking Ventulus.
