The Runner's Edge
If you haven't run cross country I know what you are thinking, you're thinking that cross country is for nerds and losers with no lives, you think that all runners are crazy for working themselves into the ground when no one really cares. You think that no one in their right mind would ever work so hard for something that no one but them and maybe their parents could ever care less about. Honestly I think you might be right. But running isn't about what other people think, running is about beating yourself, about working as hard as you can so you can tell yourself that you have done everything you can to win. Running is about telling that little voice NO, about telling it that you can run farther and faster. Running is about giving yourself every excuse to stop but then going farther because you know that you can. And if you have never stepped out onto that little white line, only to see a hundred other runners who would like nothing more than to humiliate you and show you that they are better and faster than you, then I don't expect you to understand why anyone would run. But until you do you'll never understand what it's like to tell yourself that you have pushed yourself to the edge and not fallen over!
